Are You Experiencing ‘Therapy Overwhelm’?
Lots of families bring their loved ones to my homes to help them heal. They like that I’m doing something different.
Focusing on food and nutrition.
Emphasizing exercise.
Looking at alternatives to the regular healthcare industry that believes drugs are the only solution.
The trouble is that there are so many alternatives. Putting myself out there on social media and other people’s podcasts means a lot of people contact me.
They tell me about this supplement or that therapy. How it has shown to reverse a disease or ten. That they have a friend who had a chronic disease their whole life. After taking the intervention, their friend became healthy again.
The pressure to be popular on the internet means ‘influencers’ have to constantly be cranking out content. They have to keep finding new topics to write about. That way they can stay relevant and gain followers.
And often some of their writing wanders off into truly ‘woo-woo’ kinds of stuff.
I hope I’m not doing that. And I humbly request you call me out if I do.
In my assisted living homes I see the effects of all this content on the internet. Many families are sending me links to podcasts and social media posts that they want me to investigate for their family member staying in my homes.
Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE their enthusiasm. I just hate to see them spend their money on something that doesn’t work. Or worse.
We have enough problems with the side effects from prescription drugs. And the chronic health conditions residents exhibit. We don’t need something else bringing down the health of our residents.
So what can be done?
In ten years of trying to help people heal, I’ve noticed a few trends. I want to offer some tools that may help you navigate the sea of information, misinformation, disinformation and propaganda that is the internet.
The most important part of healthcare I’ve learned is that good health takes plain old hard work. Your best gains in health will not come from a pill, a supplement or something that’s easy to do.
The most success I’ve had with people is when they sacrifice. They give up foods they enjoy. They fast. They exercise hard. They take cold showers. Or sit in a sauna for 45 minutes at a time.
Nothing annoys me more than going to a hospital and seeing the patients laying in bed almost all day while being poked, prodded and handed medication.
Another trend I see is that the natural therapies tend to work better than the man-made ones in many cases. That is not to say you shouldn’t try the man-made ones. It’s just very easy to blow off the natural ones and focus exclusively on the man-made ones.
I’m a big believer in sunlight for example. We really try to get our residents out in the sun as much as possible. When people in our homes came down with Covid 4 or 5 years ago, I mandated they go in the sun every day. The result? We didn’t lose anyone to the disease. Most cases were extremely mild.
The last trend I see is your faith. People who believe in a higher power and practice their faith seem to do better. Just having the attitude that you will improve helps a lot. Your mind controls so much of your health.
As usual this is not medical advice. And you should keep trying to find remedies that work. When you do feel overwhelmed with the information people are throwing at you, take a deep breath and go back to the basics. You might just find your best health advice there.
