The Outliers Hold the Real Keys

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.”

- Upton Sinclair

Upton Sinclair said this in 1934 when he was campaigning for Governor of California. It seems as true then as it is now.

If you go on YouTube, you can see all kinds of people talking about how they put various diseases into remission on their own.

A medication didn’t do it. Normally some form of diet helped them conquer the disease. Or fasting. Or maybe vigorous exercise. Or a combination of all three.

What’s amazing to me in many of those videos, is the lack of curiosity on the part of their doctors.

Sometimes the people in the videos would go in and tell their doctors about their remarkable recovery. Then the doctor would just shrug their shoulders. At best the doctor may say “whatever you’re doing, keep doing it”.

And some doctors would tell them to stop doing what they’re doing. It’s ‘dangerous’. Even though the person is showing signs of improving their health.

I’m sure none of the doctors mean any ill will. They’re just locked in a paradigm.

And their livelihood depends on people becoming ill. If we’re all healthy, they become like firemen. Sitting around a hospital waiting for the alarm go off.

There might not be a need for as many of them.

Yet those people who fix themselves are exactly who we should be studying. When someone comes up with great results by doing something different, it only makes sense to see what they did and duplicate it if we can get the same results.

Have you heard the story of Ignaz Semmelweis? He was a physician in Hungary in the 1840’s. He noticed women who gave birth in hospitals were dying much more often from infections than women born to midwives outside of hospitals.

After doing some investigations, he found that many doctors were doing autopsies right before they helped a woman give birth.

Seems pretty obvious what the problem is.

He started having doctors wash their hands before delivering babies. As you can imagine the infections dropped through the floor.

You’d think everyone would be thrilled. Not so much.

The other doctor’s didn’t like his idea. They thought Semmelweis made it look like the doctor’s were the ones giving the infection to the women.

Which they were.

Semmelweis eventually lost his job and the doctor’s eventually stopped washing their hands. Later Semmelweis was committed to a mental asylum.

Crazy right?

This goes on every day. I have doctor’s and department of health personnel come to my assisted living homes. When I talk to them about a health success, there just doesn’t seem to be much interest.

That’s why it’s so important for you to look into these outliers. Find the ones that have success. The people who are no longer diabetic. Or put cancer into remission.

This isn’t to say you should ignore doctor’s advice. It is to ask what is the harm of changing your diet? Or trying a fast? Or start exercising? Work with your doctor, but keep looking on your own. Maybe that crazy guy or gal who did something non-conventional is on to something?

Who knows? You might discover something truly amazing that could very well help others.
