Where’s the Beef? Here’s How to Find it
More and more people are defying the conventional wisdom that red meat is bad for you. In fact, they are discovering just the opposite. You can read all sorts of testimonials all over the internet of people who lost weight, put chronic diseases into remission, or just feel great on a carnivore diet.
Quality beef definitely matters. However, you can also see some pretty good results just buying beef from your local supermarket. The more you can afford, the better results you’ll see by buying the grass-fed meat directly from regenerative farms.
Grass fed beef has these advantages:
Higher Omega 3 fatty acid content which is great for reducing inflammation, heart and brain health
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) - improves immunity, digestion, blood sugar, reduces fat, builds muscle, and provides anti-cancer benefits
More antioxidants such as Vitamin E and Glutathione
Less bacteria
More B vitamins
More Beta-Carotene which converts to Vitamin A to help vision, immune health and skin health
Let’s face it. Many areas of the country are still experiencing high inflation. Supermarkets in these areas have regular beef that costs as much as high-quality farms in other areas of the country, especially if you purchase the beef in bulk.
Generally you can divide the total cost of buying a fraction of a cow by the pounds of beef to obtain a cost per pound. Realize this is an average. It could be a great deal for the ribeye and porterhouse steaks, but not so much for the ground beef. And generally there’s a lot of ground beef.
You might also receive organ meat, and some of the less desirable cuts. After all you’re buying a portion of the whole cow.
One interesting technique is ‘cowpooling’ where up to 4 people can buy a whole cow and split it equally. That way you receive just a quarter of the cow for a whole cow price.
Here are some websites to help you find beef ranchers that you can purchase from:
I really like this Jessie Jarvis website because you can search on your own state
Beefmaps let you see a whole map of the United States with a list of ranchers you can just click on
Beef News gives you important updates about what is happening in the beef industry
A new one that is starting up is Local Foddr. They are reaching out to a lot of beef producers to create a database of great meat producers
A lot of the bigger companies like Butcher Box can also provide seafood at good deals. If you’d like even more information on where to buy your beef and how to save money, go to my website Carnivore on a Budget and download my free guide.
Whatever kind of beef you buy, I highly recommend you buy and eat meat. We’re seeing lots of improvements with our residents on a high-protein diet. Bon Appetit!
