Can You Legally Buy Addictive Drugs at a Gas Station?
We all have heard of drug deals going down at gas stations. In many parts of big cities (and unfortunately smaller towns lately) there are homeless people hanging out and dealers taking advantage of them.
Not just homeless. There are middle class people too. Maybe kids.
Addiction is.a problem. And it’s not just drugs like cocaine and heroine.
These days there’s a lot of talk about energy supplements. Especially supplements that have a substance called Kratom in it.
Kratom is a plant extract from Southeast Asia. The marketing of health supplements with Kratom say it’s great for:
Boosting energy
Improving your mood
Relieving pain
What’s not to like? They also promote it as a way to help you overcome drug or alcohol addiction.
The trouble is that Kratom itself is addictive. There are videos and stories all over the internet of people being addicted to supplements with Kratom in them.
There are calls to make Kratom a regulated drug. Doesn’t seem like those measures have helped with other regulated drugs.
I don’t want to make this just about Kratom. I don’t know much about it. I also see stories where people say Kratom helped them when nothing else would.
What I do know is there are addictive substances everywhere:
Opioids/prescription drugs
Cigarettes
Alcohol
Other energy drinks
Sugar
Caffeine
Carbohydrates
Social media
Pornography
Government handouts
Everywhere we look something or someone is trying to make an addict out of us.
It’s one of the best business models ever. Get you hooked and they have a customer for life. No need for further marketing. I just have to supply you. I never have to worry about you going away as a customer.
What’s worse (or better if you’re a business) is that when you make someone addicted, chances are you will need other services to help you with your addiction. Your health may deteriorate. Or you may lose your job. Now you have to become dependent on other businesses or the government.
At first glance wouldn’t that be great? Addicts are spending. Business is great. Economies are growing!
The trouble is that the economy is not growing. It’s shrinking. People aren’t spending their time trying to improve their lives. They are losing their curiosity. They are not starting new businesses that could really help people.
They’re just chasing their addiction.
Addiction is slavery. Slavery is not a good basis for a strong economy and quality of life. That’s why we have to remember that Freedom really isn’t free.
Maintaining our freedom requires work. It requires deprivation. It requires a sense of defiance. It’s the same resistance whether you are trying to resist a tyrannical government or trying to stop drinking soda.
It’s just a matter of degree. Every day you will be tempted for the easy way. You need to resist it.
Whew! I didn’t expect this email to become this passionate so quickly. I guess I’m very passionate about freedom - whether that freedom is political or health-related.
